We need K5million for Apia Games

By HENRY MORABANG
PAPUA New Guinea Sports Federation needs K5million to send the full strength 500-strong Team PNG to the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, later this year.
PNGSF justification committee chairman Raymond Hoada said in a statement at week's end that the final number of sports in Team PNG teams was dependent on PNGSF raising the required amount on time.
Raising K5 million was one of the three major criteria which the PNGSF would use when approving teams to travel to Apia. The other two were full payments of levy fees and conforming to all other justification committee and PNGSF requirements.
Hoada came out last week strongly on these three major criteria after dropping three sports from travelling to Apia because they did not meet the PNGSF requirements. However, the three sports (not named) have until this Friday to appeal for their possible inclusion.
He said names of the three sports were withheld until such time as the sports disputes tribunal makes its decision for the PNGSF to announce.
He said two others sports were uncertainties but were subject to performances in overseas competitions.
Eight sports have been endorsed subject to submitting documentation as requested by the justification committee by the end of this month.
Respective sports have been advised in writing. Final endorsement of these sports is subject to international competition and measure of performance.
The total minimal number endorsed is 422, and all sports have been given a May 9 deadline to submit final teams with non-travelling reserves so that PNGSF can conform to Pacific Games Charter deadline of May 25.
The general team management will start processing entry by name after May 9 and complete the process by May 22 - three days before the May 25 deadline.
Hoada said that should a sport withdraw after the close of entries on May 25, the sport will be penalised US$1,000 as per the Games charter.
