Softball dilemma
Mount Hagen has a softball association but not field to play its matches.
This is because the Gomis field which would normally be available was used for the off-season rugby league competition. The association had previously used the Mount Hagen Secondary School field (2003-05) but could not secure it again for this year's competition.
As result of all these, Mt Hagen will be missing out on this year's national championship in Kavieng during the Easter weekend.
Association president Demas Gigimat said they did not have a competition last year and would probably not have one this year.
Gigimat said that softball was a family game and it was sad that they did not have a playing field.
He said that rugby league competitions were occupying all the fields in the city, giving no chance to Mount Hagen Softball Association to play its competition.
Gigimat said he would look around in the hope of finding a field and getting the 2007-08 season started later in the year.

Amet in charge
Port Moresby Rugby Football Union has a new president. He is Arnold Amet Junior, who was elected for a two-year term at the Union's annual general meeting on Tuesday.
Amet is from the Brothers Club. Other office bearers elected at the AGM included Rennie Wekine (vice-president - Harlequins), Kerry Walsh (secretary - Kone Sharks) and Sova Amet (treasurer - University).
The new executives take over from Emmanuel Narokobi (president), Michael Bai (vice-president), Lincoln Hanson (secretary) and Gabriel Tika (acting treasurer).
The change of executives comes at a time when POMRFU is embarking on moves to upgrade the Bava Park facilities and to host the first ever women's rugby competition in the country.

Boxing contest on
AIPEANA Amatuer Boxing Club in Bereina, Central province, will be hosting a novice championship this weekend at Aipeana village. AABC president John Kape said the championship is a selection trial for the Bereina team for the PNG Games in Lae in November this year.
Bereina Amateur Boxing Assocaition president Lawerence Pukali and his executive said they will not entertain any of the club who is not affiliated to the association. He said any club wishing to participate in the championship must pay their affiliation fee of K200 to BABA treasurer Rocky Maino.
Pukali said tournament director Charlie Apau will confirm all the clubs before they take part in the championships. He stressed that the clubs must affiliate now or miss out on the championship.

Goilala soccer appeal
TWO teams representing Goilala Soccer Association in an upcoming Central Soccer Cup tournament are calling for sponsorship from business houses and individual to support them.
The two teams, Goilala Blue Hills and Kunimaipai Cowboys, need K600 nomination fee for the tournament plus transport from Bakoidu in Hiritano Highway to Port Moresby. The teams also need training balls, play T-shirts, and uniform if possible.
Goilala Soccer Association Joseph Jupa has made a special plea to business houses, especially Tolukuma Gold Mine operators, to contact him on 692 2254 or Scott Vavine at the PNG Sports Commission.

Pre-season start
AFL Lae will kick off its three-week pre-season competition on April 10, before the season proper gets underway in May. AFL Lae acting president Peter Morris has urged old and intending clubs to contacting the AFL executives and express their interest for this year.
Eriku Swans, NGI Power, Unitech, Koboni, West Eagles and Balob Turtles are current clubs which are expected to field teams this year, Morris said.
The acting president can be reached on mobile number 6890843 or the treasurer Sam Nalong at Markham Road Primary School on 4724174 or the secretary Lorna Kenneth at Angau Memorial General Hospital on 4732100/1211 for further information.
