SHP school fee subsidy was a bad idea
THE idea of a school fee subsidy for parents in Southern Highlands should not be an issue for most concerned citizens.
In truth, the students and their parents regret taking the subsidy for granted in the past.
The students did not focus on their studies and got involved in undesirable activities while the parents neglected to supervise them.
As a result, Grade 12 students in most of our leading schools failed to find a place in tertiary institutions.
I hope other students who see their parents slaughtering the last pig to raise money for their school fees will realise the sacrifice and do their part – excel in their studies.
I also appeal to the people of Nipa-Kutubu, especially the youths living close to the highway between Nipa and Poroma, not to put up roadblocks or get involved in inhuman activities but to respect the rights of travellers.
This will enable students and teachers to travel safely.

Major Wong, Nipa-Kutubu
