WELCOME on our day of self-indulgence – yes, it’s Chooseday again, when
you can do exactly as you please, per courtesy of Column One. But please
take note: The rules forbid the assassination of mothers-in-law, the
termination of that cursed parrot on the veranda or the writing of
threatening letters to the undersigned.

REV Dr Sir Percy Chatterton is the subject of our Quiz, and this morning
we’ll continue with our small but distinguished number of replies. The
first e-mail for today came from our man with Oil Search, Rob Igunga, who
gave the correct information then added a sentence or two about Percy
Chatterton’s writings.
***
PERHAPS his most famous book, at least with the general public, was his
memoir or autobiography Day that I have loved: Percy Chatterton’s Papua.
For many years this book was required reading for anyone with even a
passing interest in Papua; it reflected the huge affection Percy
Chatterton had for the people to whom he ministered both as a missionary
and as a Member of the House of Assembly and later
Parliament.
***
AND as Rob notes, Percy Chatterton wrote many other titles, among them
the still valuable An Introduction to the Common Language of Papua: Say
it in Motu, and an interesting addition to the People’s of the Pacific
series, called The Motuans. He remained a true champion of the Motuan and
Papuan people all his life.

NEXT response was the work of Irene Gashu, who always finds a moment
during her busy professional life in Tokyo, Japan, to drop us an entry. A
very good
morning to you Irene, and thanks for your latest and correct answer.
Irene added the date of publication of Day that I have loved, which was
1972.

TOP of the morning to all those who labour at Nictosh PNG in Lae, and
particularly to Mulenga Nyondo, who answered correctly; greetings also to
Devjani Chaudhuri in Summerside, Canada, and our thanks for the right
answer.
***
AND then it’s greetings to Lahui Ako at the PNG embassy in Beijing,
China, with special thanks for a unique and nicely detailed answer that
we’ll share with you tomorrow. Lukim yupela!
