Woman gets new K9,000 house

By PETER MIVA
A 33-YEAR-old woman from Henganofi, Eastern Highlands, is the proud owner of a brand new three-bedroom house at Budeng, 12-Mile outside Lae city.
Julianne Terry, who works as a sales representative with the Ela Motors Lae branch, received the keys to the house from the Habitat for Humanity PNG’s National Board chairman Benson Nablu, who officially opened the house during its dedication ceremony on Sunday.
Ms Terry is one of 40 home-owners from the Budeng community under the Habitat for Humanity PNG Morobe sub-affiliate housing project.
The house costs K9,000, with Ms Terry meeting half of the costs from fundraising activities and assistance from members of her building community group and Habitat for Humanity PNG meeting the other half.
Ms Terry’s house is only the third in the Budeng community to be officially handed over to owners with two more houses to be dedicated and 35 more yet to be built.
She said the house was built within six months and that it was a dream come true for her after being evicted from the Salvation Army hostel in 2004.
Ms Terry said it was her dream to own a house and urged other young women to take up the challenge to build their own houses.
She said most public servants and private sector employees did not have decent homes and live in single rooms in settlements that were being rented for K80 to K90 per fortnight.
Ms Terry told a huge turn-out of members of the nearby communities and invited guests at the ceremony that she was determined to have a home of her own after her eviction and her dreams have now come to fruition through dedication, perseverance and commitment.
She told the crowd that dreams and visions were worthless if they were not put into action.
Ms Terry thanked the Habitat for Humanity PNG housing ministry for making her dreams become a reality.
But she said it was not the end, as she had to continue to help raise funds to help build houses for the other 35 members in the Budeng building project besides paying back her mortgage to Habitat for Humanity PNG.
