Time for leaders to make peace
IT is not uncommon for politicians to
have political differences and often, after elections, they can
set aside their issues aside to work together to deliver services
to the people.
Cardo Stuntzo expressed skeptism (The National, March 14) over the
union between Peter Ipatas and John Pundari, pointing to their
past rivalry.
I believe Pundari achieved the greatest honour in politics when he
made peace with Ipatas.
Many leaders would find it hard to do such a thing.
Our multi-tribalism results in many differences among the people.
Thus no political party since has been able to secure an outright
majority in the elections and no coalition – until the Somare-led
government – has been able to serve a full term.
Sir Michael has the integrity bill to thank for.
Pundari showed that it is time for leaders to make peace so that
their supporters can unite and end tribal wars which have
disrupted the delivery of services.
The Ipatas-Pundari union did not ruin the Engan political image
and integrity as Stuntzo claims nor did they let the province
down.
They did what Enga needs at this time.
The union is the beginning of a new era for the Enga province and
we should take People’s Party as the stepping stone.
