Cops on ice over attack

POLICE Commissioner Gari Baki has directed the suspension of officers allegedly involved in the attack on top police prosecutor Chief Superintendent Thomas Eluh.
Mr Baki has demanded that NCD/Central police commander Assistant Police Commissioner Alfred Reu provide a full report on the attack on Mr Eluh, which took place at Gordon in the vicinity of the police station on Wednesday afternoon.
“I have directed the suspension of the policemen allegedly involved in the assault on Mr Eluh, and further directed a full investigation into yesterday’s (Wednesday) incident.
“I cannot, at this point in time, say anything further on the issue until and unless I have a full report on the incident.
“However, I am very concerned by the media reports of what happened yesterday, and I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the attack on a very senior officer of the constabulary.
“There are procedures in place for suspending officers of the constabulary and assaulting a senior officer is definitely not part of the process. The officers responsible for Mr Eluh’s assault as well as other actions as reported by the media, would be dealt with accordingly.
“There is no place in the constabulary for errant or undisciplined policemen. All members of the constabulary are bound by the police Code of Ethics, the Police Force Act and the laws of Papua New Guinea, and each member will be answerable for his or her own actions,” Mr Baki said.
Meanwhile, Ombudsman Peter Masi said yesterday the attack on Mr Eluh showed that there was real serious problem within the police force that Mr Baki as the top cop must look into.
“The attack on Mr Eluh was uncalled for. It clearly showed that the police force had real serious problems and the mess must be cleaned up. Public matters should not be mixed up with personal matters,” Mr Masi said.
He added that the attack on Mr Eluh was a result of dissatisfaction and disharmony in the police force.
He said public offices held by the police should not be mixed up with personal issues, as he condemned the behavior.
