PM welcomes Chinese envoy

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare has welcomed the vice-premier of the State Council of China Zeng Peiyan and his delegation on his official visit to Papua New Guinea.
Sir Michael said Mr Zeng’s visit would facilitate personal contact between leaders of both countries, which was essential for the promotion of bilateral relations.
“More importantly, it will provide an opportunity for the governments of PNG and China to reaffirm their commitment to cooperate at the bilateral and multilateral levels on issues of mutual interest.”
While in Port Moresby, Mr Zeng will pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister and will hold discussions with Deputy Prime Minister Don Polye and other relevant cabinet ministers today.
This will be followed by the signing of a number of official documents which will include:
n A letter of exchange for implementing the Usino junction-Yamagi road project;
n A letter of exchange for the rehabilitation and extension of the Highlands Agriculture Institute in Mt Hagen; and
n An economic and technical cooperation agreement.
“We look forward to concluding the bilateral commitments as these arrangements will no doubt bring tangible benefits PNG,” Sir Michael said.
He said China was not only a special friend but also a major development partner which could be relied on in times of need.
