PM to open water supply project

PRIME Minister Sir Michael Somare will this weekend visit Aitape in Sandaun province to open a water supply project to supply about 3,000 people.
Sir Michael will travel to Suain village from Wewak by chopper tomorrow for the opening and return to the East Sepik capital the same day.
The Suain water supply project, built at a total cost of about K345,000, took about three months to construct starting in early January.
The project, with a design life of about 20 years, was funded by local MP and Minister for Forests Patrick Pruaitch.
Other beneficiaries of the project include the local primary school and the Catholic and Revival mission stations.
Project manager Wilson Miroi of Torricelli Consultants said yesterday that 41 taps had been installed at selected locations in the village.
“With these 41 taps at the villagers’ doorsteps, life would be easier for everyone and standards should improve,” Mr Wilson said in a media brief yesterday.
He said a dam was constructed across the source creek at about 30m above the village, including a 1,000 litre sedimentation tank and a 36,500 litres storage tank 16m above the village.
When applauding the project completion and scheduled opening tomorrow, Mr Pruaitch described it as a major achievement for the village.
