NZ envoy visits agency

NEW Zealand High Commissioner Neils Holm was in Goroka this week to observe and assess the operation of the New Zealand government-funded Fresh Produce Development Agency (FPDA).
Mr Holm said the New Zealand government understood the importance of agriculture in PNG and would continue its assistance.
He attended the FPDA board meeting on Wednesday and yesterday.
Meanwhile, general manager of FPDA John Bennett said the organisation had to be meaner, leaner and stronger to progress and develop the agriculture industry in PNG.

Warning for non-swimmers

By PETER KORUGL
AUTHORITIES in Lae yesterday called off the search for a man who went missing at the mouth of the Markham River last week.
The disaster and emergency service (DES), which conducted the search, pulled its men out after they failed to find to find the missing person’s body.
“We can’t find his body and he was the third person to drown in Lae,” DES head Roy Kamen said.
Mr Kamen said in January a man went for a swim at the same place and disappeared, while at Voco Point last month, a woman walked all the way into the sea and drowned.
“In the latest incident, the mother of the man was watching when the son disappeared into the water.
“We keep on warning people who do not know how to swim to stay clear of the sea but they don’t seem to listen,” Mr Kamen said.

‘Temporary’ ban on exports of war relics

A “TEMPORARY ban” on the export of war relics has been issued by the Government.
The move was announced by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the National Museum and Art Gallery in Lae, Morobe province, yesterday.
Museum director Simon Poraituk said the “temporary ban” would prevent war relics from leaving the country without appropriate decisions from relevant Government agencies.
