Corruption looming
By HARLYNE JOKU
THE Member for Moresby-South and Minister
for Community Development Dame Carol Kidu is worried that the processes
followed in the coming election will be corrupted with electoral
officers being bribed by intending candidates.
She said sources had informed her that a few intending Port Moresby
candidates had been meeting with certain officers within the Electoral
Commission for dubious reasons.
“I am confident that there will be enough people in Moresby-South who
would want to return me to Parliament but I am worried about information
from several sources that a few intending candidates have been meeting
with certain officers within the Electoral Commission for dubious
reasons,” Dame Carol made the comments when responding to questions by
The National in relation to her future in politics when winning an award
by the United States government for PNG’s International Woman of
Courage.
“I believe in the people but I am worried about the potential for
corrupt processes.
“I am aware of several people who are extremely confident that they will
win the coming election. I am aware of a lot of early campaigning
involving gifts, unrealistic promises and outright defamatory lies being
said about me. That is the nature of politics everywhere,” she said.
Dame Carol said when the legal time for campaign begins she would make
her development and financial report known to the people of
Moresby-South.
She said she was confident of returning to continue to developing
legislation and policy frameworks that were appropriate and sustainable
in Melanesian societies.
“We must take ownership of our own destiny and make necessary changes to
the laws and policies we have inherited from overseas so that our future
combines universal principals with our proud heritage from the past.
“Politicians must stop promising people that they can solve all their
problems but assist them in finding their own solutions,” Dame Carol
said.
