Work on GH finally starts

DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation Don Polye yesterday officiated at the ground breaking ceremony at the Popondetta General Hospital.
Since the operating theatre burnt down 16 years ago, there has been promise after promise for the building of a new operating theatre.
For 16 years Popondetta General Hospital has been using a make-shift operating theatre.
Mr Polye told the crowd that on behalf of the Government, Minister for Health Sir Peter Barter gave K2.3 million towards the building of the new operating theatre last year.
Mr Polye said the lack of maintenance over the years had meant that this Government today had to spend more money on the rehabilitation and maintenance of public infrastructure like the Popondetta General Hospital.
On behalf of the Government, Mr Polye committed another K3 million out of the surplus budget to go towards the total cost of renovations and purchase of equipment for the hospital.
The present Popondetta General Hospital was built in 1967 to cater for 55,000 people. Today, it remains basically the same but caters for 145,000 people.
The hospital’s chairman Timothy Titipu and the chief executive officer Sam Vevego took Mr Polye on a tour of the hospital before the ground breaking ceremony.
Mr Polye commended the board, management and staff of the hospital for keeping the hospital clean despite the rundown state of the buildings and the equipment used to treat patients.
