| Focus should not only be in POM | |

I AM delighted by the fact that
cricket has finally reached the heights that it should have achieved a
long time ago. I commend the sponsors and commend their efforts in promoting the sport that has been under-rated for far too long and that this investment will go a long way in: 1. Developing better community relations; 2. Level of competitiveness in the cricket circles will improve two-fold; 3. Provide semi-employment for those who are not formally employed; 4. Professional and structured outlook of the sport; and 5. Promoting cricket on a wider scale. I challenge the organisers and sponsors to come out with a new format as I feel there is no justice if we continue to focus only on Port Moresby. What about other centres? Is there another John Ovia in Alotau or Lae? Is there another Tuku Raka (former PNG fast bowler) in Central or Hagen? This is my concern and that such a format could be detrimental to the sport's future. There a lot of young kids who are currently playing in the Under 15 competition in the Lae Association. They may not hail from the cricket playing region but are just as passionate as their counterparts in Port Moresby. What a great prospect to have a child from the Highlands or Momase region be at the helm of a sport played by Papuans. The fact that only one player was selected from Lae indicates that either Lae does not have players capable of making it to the next tier or it has been discriminated against. The standard of cricket in Lae (once a cricketing power in PNG) has been on the decline since cricket authorities show disregard to the sport in the province. This may be potentially damaging to the sport as we know that Morobe boasts a lot of other sports that our talented cricketers may resort to. This year has been a challenging one for the administrators in Lae but it was great to see the completion of the competition with the Koukou Cricket Club beating Raukele in the final.
