Awarding contract to local firm a worry
THE Lae residents welcome the commitment made by the Somare Government to upgrade the deteriorating state of Lae city roads, which have been neglected for a very long time.
The commitment made by the government with a first lot of K25 million allocated to fix the roads will not be achieved if those in positions fail to deliver basic services to the people.
Lae city generates huge revenue for the national purse and is viewed by many, including external donor agencies, as the economic hub of the country.
Therefore, it needs good roads which must be maintained regularly by reputable construction firms.
It is a worry to note in the recent media reports that the contract has been awarded to a local firm, which lack expertise and capacity in terms of machinery, to carry out the work to the expected standard.
Lae residents and the people of Morobe would like to see that the services delivered are value for money.
The recent letter (March 20) by “Fed-up dust eater” of Lae needs to be analysed as the points raised are valid.
We urge Governor Luther Wenge to ensure those who have hijacked the procurement process for the said contract are dealt with appropriately.
