| Shocked over abuse of sister | |
|
I went home to Mendi last Christmas
after hearing horrible stories about my sister being beaten up or
verbally abused by her husband. I did not believe them until I saw it
with my own eyes. We were having a meeting beside the NBC in Mendi last Christmas when my brother-in-law suddenly got up and attacked my sister, biting her eyebrows in front of hundreds of people. As my sister fell to the ground bleeding profusely, her in-laws grabbed and shoved her into a waiting vehicle and drove her to their village in Upper Mendi. We reported the incident to the police but they were just as helpless as us. After two weeks of suspected torture and abuse, my sister was sent back to our village. We were glad to see her but she refused to relate what happened to her in her husband’s village. I had to return to Australia at the end of my vacation. Two weeks ago, she was again forced against her will to go to her husband’s village. I cannot understand why no one took any action to stop her husband and her in-laws from abusing her. Can the PPC in Mendi look into this matter urgently? FK Via email |
