By THADDEUS TIRIMAN BANK of Papua New Guinea Eagles stamped their supremacy in the Port Moresby Corporate Nines competition by soaring over Paul Paraka Lawyer Giants 20-12 in the grand final last Friday night. Earlier in the evening they made a comeback to beat Nambawan Super 16-14 after trailing 14-8 in the first half of the preliminary match game one. Paul Paraka Lawyers had a lucky break in the second preliminary match after the game was awarded to them in their match against IBS. The two teams were still locked at 4-4 by the end of extra time and PPL having scored first in the game was awarded the win. Adding a little flavour to the grand final night was a fantastic fireworks display to start the grand final and BPNG wasted no time in running in the first two unconverted tries in a space of five minutes to lead 8-0. The Giants finally scored in the 13th minute through Edea Morea. They scored again just before halftime in reply to Eagles Basse Robert’s try in the fifteenth minute to trail 12-8. The second half was all BPNG’s way as they ran in two more tries through fullback Daniel Tokura and outside centre and later man-of-the-match Selwyn Mai to seal the match 20-12. BPNG captain John was excited and although they played classy football compared with the opposing team he attributed their win to the players’ cooperation throughout the season. “It was the spirit of unity that we have. We play as one during the game and we know very well how each one plays,” he said. |
