Educators meet to get funds

UP to 57 administrators from the country’s 22 higher education institutions are in Port Moresby for a three-day workshop to put together a proposal towards securing a slice of the Japanese funded Okinawa Initiative worth US$1.5 billion (K4.5 billion).
Director-general of the Office of Higher Education William Tagis said at yesterday’s opening that the Japanese funding was brought to his attention last March 4.
Since then, the OHE started to make plans to access the fund, which is set aside for South Pacific nations including PNG.
Dr Tagis said the funding was a government-to-government financial assistance.
At the opening yesterday, he said: “Consistent with OHE’s drive to implement incoming National Higher Education Plan III from 2007 to 2016 and the MTDS (2005-2010), the Okinawa Initiative is directed at priority activities of NHEP III.
“Institutions of higher education are to contribute to the overall implementation of the NHEP III and its objectives.”
He said priorities included building research capacities, facilities and equipment for sciences, engineering and technologies, improvement of teaching and learning facilities and infrastructure development.
