Land lease void

THE Waigani National Court has found that the multi-million Ramu Nickel land lease to Owoza Land Group Inc was wrongly awarded.
Acting Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia, in his 11-page ruling, found that the Special Agriculture and Business Lease (SABL) was wrongly awarded to Owoza Land Group Inc.
The land is described as portion 19C, Milinch Sepu, Fourmil Ramu, also called “Duakai Owozo” land which is the contentious land between various landowners situated within the Special Mining Lease 8 (SML8) awarded to the multi-million Kina Ramu Nickel Ltd.
Sir Salamo also declared the SML 8 granted to Ramu Nickel Ltd by the Head of State on July 2000 as valid lease.
The ruling stemmed from an application filed by Ramu Nickel Ltd, the first plaintiff to review the decision of the then Lands and Physical Planning Minister Michael Nali in granting SABL to Owoza Land Group Inc on August 18, 2003.
The multi-million kina mining company filed the application against Lands Minister Dr Puka Temu , the Owoza Land Group Inc and the State.
