POM-based officers disarmed

TWO Port Moresby-based police officers were disarmed in a remote part of Southern Highlands province after they were found fully armed in a restricted project site.
The two officers (named), attached with the National Capital District Sector Patrol, one of them a non-commissioned officer (NCO) in charge of one of the sector commands (named), were disarmed by police officers who are currently based there on operation and monitoring the area.
Members of special services division two and four (SSD 2 and 4) disarmed the officers who were found within the Oil Search Limited-owned Gobe oil fields last weekend.
Reports received by The National from Gobe stated that the two officers were reportedly in the company of some locals, believed to be landowners of the Gobe oil fields, when they were apprehended.
The oil fields are a restricted area and people who travel into the area have to make arrangements with Oil Search first.
The only police personnel to enter this area is the Police Commissioner Gari Baki, who then authorises the presence of police, especially if firearms are to be involved.
Currently the SSD 2 and 4 are in the area under a formalised deployment arrangement to keep surveillance of the area, but the two officers allegedly by-passed all the authorisation check points and were “illegal” found in the area.
The firearms that were reportedly in their possessions were removed from them.
