Kanawi pleased over sugar intake in Manus

By VERONICA MANUK
SUGAR price in Manus province that has soared in recent times has been brought under control after the provincial government threatened retailers with sanctions.
A 1kg packet normally sells for around K6, but the price doubled to K12 and even K13 due to delay in harvest in Ramu that led to shortage of the sweetener around the country for several months.
After receiving complaints from consumers, Manus provincial administrator Wep Kanawi instructed the Commerce division to make sure retailers and wholesalers did not overcharge consumers.
Mr Kanawi said he was happy people in the province had taken heed of health warnings about sugar levels and were consuming less sugar.
“Many of the people in the province are suffering from sugar related illnesses and I’m happy that they are consuming less sugar now,” he said.
Mr Kanawi said shops were also controlling the sale to ensure no more than one purchase per person was necessary for household consumption.
