Global attention on region online

AN online database established last November to promote small business houses from Papua New Guinea and other Pacific island nations has received a huge global attention, according to the Pacific Islands Trade and Investment Commission (PITIC) yesterday.
The Pacificbizonline.com received more than 12,000 hits from users in countries including Hong Kong, the United States, Australia, the European countries including Germany and Belgium, the Middle East, China and Sweden.
This site was jointly established by the Pacific Co-operation Foundation and the PITIC to help small business houses in PNG and other small Pacific island nation reduce their dependency to survive on special international trade preferences and overseas development aid.
The PITIC is an organisation that helps Pacific island nation trade with New Zealand. It also helps reduce the trade imbalance relationship between New Zealand and Pacific island nations.
PITIC said users from Australia, Hong Kong and the US topped the list of visitors from 25 countries with a total of 3,200 hits last month.
Overall, 22% of visitors last month spent between five minutes and an hour using the database.
Since January, the number of hits has almost tripled from more than 1,300 to more than 3,200 due to a PCF and PITIC NZL advertising campaign launched last month.
