Goroka cops urge urgent HQ response on accommodation

POLICE personnel in Goroka have appealed to their bosses at police headquarters to do their part in providing accommodation for them.
Provincial police commander Philip Solala said his men had prepared all the ground work and were calling on the police hierarchy to visit them.
“We are now ready. We have prepared the ground work for the new barracks, renovated a few buildings and have collected building materials. We are appealing to the department to do their part,” Mr Solala said.
He said since the fire gutted the single barracks last year, the remnants were improvised as accommodation while they worked on a new site west of Goroka.
Drains had been dug, water drained and the land cleared for the buildings to be erected.
“My men had not waited for the Government. We had gone ahead and carried out what was required of us,” Mr Solala said.
Goroka police station commander Chief Insp David Seine in reiterating the PPC’s call, said stacks of timber had been readied and the land cleared.
“I am sure the Police Department would consider Goroka as one of the first places to assist. We know all the paperwork had been completed and our appeal was for us to be visited first,” Mr Seine said.
Const Robert Kee, speaking on behalf of the affected families, urged the police hierarchy to speed up the assistance.
He said the elections would draw his colleagues to leave the barracks, and they needed to settle their families before leaving for election duties.
