Party vows to recall ECP, remove provincial
govts
By ZACHERY PER
THE provincial government system will be
abolished and the Enhanced Corporation Programme (ECP) reintroduced if
PNG National Party gets into power after the election.
Former MP John Nilkare, who is contesting the Gumine Open seat, told the
party’s national convention in Goroka last Friday that their priority
was to remove provincial governments which had created a bottleneck that
stalled the efficient delivery of services to the people.
Mr Nilkare described provincial governments as “white elephants”
impeding services to the rural people.
The man who coined the Village Services Scheme in 1997 when he led the
now defunct League for National Advancement party, said the National
Party would strengthen local level governments with increased funding
and resources as the alternative.
Other policies outlined include:
n Selling of all State-owned corporate entities such as PNG Ports Ltd,
PNG Power, Telikom, etc, with the proceeds to go towards a separate
basket to be known as the national development fund;
n Reintroduction of the Commodity Price Stabilisation Fund for coffee
and other agricultural commodities like copra and cocoa; and
n Within 100 days after getting into government, the National Party
would ban all log export.
Instead, the government would encourage downstream processing of its
vast forestry resources and only processed timber and other by-products
exported.
Party executives also recognised North Waghi MP Michael Mal Kas as the
party leader to lead them into the election.
