Lahanis set to take on Cup rivals

By ZACHERY PER
A determined Bintangor Lahanis sounded early warning to opponents preparing for the SP Cup competition by beating Pagini Warrior 40-18 in a SP Cup trial match in Goroka on Easter Sunday.
Kumul winger Alphonse 'Utai' Kapil and former Kumul Garnet Auwo in their usual busting runs contributed two tries each.
While others were collected by Anton Kui, Stanley Moliki, Nicko Slain, and Cassey Frank.
Warriors half back Dickson Kumba was the lone try scorer for the Simbu boys in the first half, the try was unconverted.
Kapil scooped up a lose ball and sprinted 60 metres to open the score book, the try was converted 6-0.
A clever footwork by half back Frank paid off with a try to forward Nicko Slain to cross for an unconverted try to stretch the lead 10-0.
Before the break the hosts maintained the onslaught where center Kui stretched across and grabbed a try and successfully converted his own try to put his side into a comfortable lead 16-0. Warrior's Kumba broke the silence that saw Warriors trial 4-16 at the break.
At the commencement of the second stanza, Frank's foot work paid handsomely when he crossed for an unconverted try that stretched the lead 20-4.
Warriors put up a strong challenged through regular campaigners Roger Kuman, Titus Drua, Mitna Dua, Newman Alphonse, Jonathan Jeremiah, Lahani's reject Wemin 'Hitler' Adolf, John Nari and Max Ruing.
However their hope was shattered with a runaway try to former Kumul winger and Lahanis centre Garnet Auwo that extended the host's lead 24-4.
Another clever move by the Lahanis saw Kapil to sprint 65 meters from the corner to score under the post that place Lahanis into clear waters 30-4.
However, Warriors pursued strongly and scored a converted try through Johnson Kwiwa to trial 10-30.
The visitors maintained the momentum and made it possible for five eight Mitna Dua to cross the line that narrowed the gap 14-30.
Lahanis retaliated with another runaway converted try to Auwo to furtetred the lead 36-14.
Warriors scored the final try of the game through outside centre David Jones to narrow the gap 18-36.
However, Lahanis Port Moresby import Paulus Mondo opened up Warrior's defence, offloaded to Auwo who sets up Moliki to cross over at fulltime to seal the game 40-18.
Another first SP Cup trial match Goroka rugby league team, the Nokondis defeated the second Warrior's team 'Kua Siune' 30-20.
