THANK goodness it doesn’t happen often! We are of course referring to the name and date of today, neither of which are likely to win any popularity awards in our household. We can only trust that we are spared a plague of locusts, death of the first-born or an unexpected visit from Freddy Kruger.

IT’S moments like these we’re all for milk and honey – on other days and dates we would regard the aforementioned as suitable only for elderly invalids. Which reminds us – whatever happened to junket? No, not the luxurious pampering associated with many an alleged “conference” or “seminar” and often indulged in by our politician friends, although those are certainly “junkets”.

WE’RE referring to that milky substance that once lurked in the dessert bowls of pale-faced sufferers of peptic ulcers. It was supposed to quench the fires of the most outraged intestine – and to our mind the tasteless wobbly mass did battle with blancmange as the ultimate nadir of the culinary arts. Has it passed into limbo in company with the anti-macassa, the hearing trumpet and the little phials of moustache wax beloved of Grandpapa?

WHAT a pleasant change to see yesterday’s front page dedicated to an excellent picture of a female military pilot, Lieutenant Wii. The picture came from old friend Capt Tom Kilala of the Defence Force Media Unit. That’s one compliment we can give to our three disciplined forces – policewomen, female Defence Force personnel and the team of women warders in Corrective Services are setting an outstanding example.

THOSE responsible for staffing the most senior levels of Government departments and their private enterprise equivalents should wake up and take notice. Women excel in responsible decision-making positions.

AND while we’re acknowledging the superior sex, Milne Bay’s Suzannah Davis-Ling deserves a large perfumed bouquet for her win in the prestigious International Staff and Quality Awards. This award is dedicated to the promotion of a quality business culture within companies. The award was presented to Mrs Davis-Ling’s company, PNG Tailoring Ltd during the Business International Directions convention in Paris.

WE wish all our readers the most pleasant of weekends – catch you on Monday.
