Look beyond ECP, aid
SEVERAL intending candidates have
talked about bringing back the Enhanced Cooperation Programme (ECP)
and to seek more aid if they are elected. PNG cannot play into
Australian strategy which would allow it to manipulate our
political environment for Canberra’s own interests. Australia
helped to change the government in Timor Leste and also tried to
bring down the Somare Government through the Moti affair. Our
so-called “big men” must look beyond the ECP and aid. If they get
into Parliament, they must be prepared to make important and
decisive political decisions to address social, governance and
other problems in the interest of the public. Our foreign partners
can assist where required. – Berau Mok, Port Moresby
Learn from past mistakes
MOST of the people who intend to
contest in the coming general election are motivated by the chance
to be rich. They are not true leaders and we should learn from our
past mistakes. Every elected member will receive funds in various
forms for development and delivery of services, but in the case of
Simbu for example, I do not think the MP spent more than K50,000
on the electorate during his term. What has happened to the rest
of the money? Governor Peter Launa, on the hand, gives everything
back to the people because he knows the funds are meant for them,
not him. – Wara Tapa, Melbourne, Australia
Probe club activities
I AM concerned over the activities at
a club in Gordon, Port Moresby, which operates from 6pm to 6am,
every day. My daughter and her friends frequent this club
regularly. It is disgusting to hear women singing, screaming and
even wailing through the early hours. As a concerned parent, I
appeal to the authorities to investigate the club’s activities as
I believe some women also spend the night there. – Concerned,
Port Moresby
Powi is transparent
WILLIAM Powi has a good record of
transparency and I think that is why the NEC appointed him to be
administrator of Southern Highlands. Governor Hami Yawari’s
opposition to Powi raises many questions and I hope the relevant
authorities will keep a close watch on the governor and the
province, especially with the elections just months away. –

Kotapu did proper study
I BELIEVE Dr Sylvester Kotapu carried
out a proper study of the effects of the Tolukuma gold mine on the
river systems and presented his findings in a professional manner.
I am disappointed with the criticisms levelled against him,
especially when he is only trying to save lives. – Lapan
