Philemon rejects donations

By YEHIURA HRIEHWAZI
FINANCIAL donations to political parties by state-owned enterprises is “akin to corruption, stealing, and extortion of the highest level,” New Generation Party leader Bart Philemon said.
And Mr Philemon has hit out at the Ombudsman Commission for inaction regarding this issue.
He said this yesterday following the Ombudsman Commission’s urging of all Government and statutory authorities not to apply public funds as donations to political parties and candidates for the general election.
Mr Philemon said the Ombudsman Commission had come in a “bit too late” as public funds had already been committed to political parties and candidates.
He called on the Ombudsman Commission to collect the names of the political parties, candidates, and Government and statutory authorities for possible prosecution after the elections.
“I back up the Ombudsman Commission’s statement that this is improper and illegal,” Mr Philemon said.
“I urge the Ombudsman Commission to come out with the names of political parties and candidates that have been approaching public bodies to support their fundraising drives.
“This is in the public interest, with the elections just around the corner.
“The public is entitled to know who these unscrupulous political parties and individuals are.
“Such political parties and individuals are also placing themselves in a very dangerous and compromising situation by asking for public money.
“The New Generation Party, when in government, will investigate funds donated from Government departments and statutory bodies, and have those responsible face the full force of law,”Mr Philemon said.
