Union finally gets underway
By HAIVETA KIVIA
Morobe Rugby Football Union finally
gets its 2007 season underway this weekend after so much delay.
The union which supplies bulk of the players for Super 4 Champions
Besta Northern Reds had delays after delays to the start of its
season for a number of reasons.
These reasons have placed Morobe right behind the likes of Madang,
Popondetta and Wewak in terms of preparation and match fitness for
the up coming Besta Northern Challenge. The challenge will be held
next month.
The very reason that the season failed to start on schedule was
that, the former executives failed to hold the union's Annual
General Meeting and furnish the President's and Financial reports
as required in the constitution.
An interim committee led by Darren Bishop stepped in to run the 10
a side competition and moved to get the union organised for the
2007 season.
The AGM was finally held and Bishop and his committee were
officially elected the new executive of the union.
The Bishop committee then got stuck in player insurance issue and
had to sort that out before it could start the season. It finally
got things in order and the season will kick off tomorrow at the
SCRUM Oval.
Recently promoted Premier clubs Vikings and Greyhounds get the
ball rolling for the big boys.
Both clubs did well last year in A grade and will give established
sides Royals, Harlequins, Unitech and Pirates a challenge.
Royals will take on Unitech in the reply of last year's final and
the winner will set the pace for the season.
In the A grade matches, Vikings play Greyhounds and Telikom takes
on Hornibrook Harlequins.
On Sunday, Hornibrook Harlequins play Pirates in the only premier
division match.
Bishop said it had taken a bit longer to get things going but he
was happy that the season will kick off this weekend.
"It taken us a while but we will be ready for the Northern
Challenge and Coca-Cola Super 4s," he said.
