St John’s to provide service during polls

THE St John’s Ambulance branch in Western Highlands province is preparing to provide emergency services during the national election.
The organisation will provide 300 volunteers, mostly health workers in the highlands region, to provide emergency services.
During a rehearsal last Thursday at the Mt Hagen General Hospital, Supt John Kuram said the main purpose was to save lives of people who might get hurt during violence which are common during elections, especially in the highlands.
He said they had resource and manpower on standby to go out and provide the vital services.
Mr Kuram said five of his officers would be based in every district to attend to emergency cases.
He said a committee would monitor and conduct the operation during the elections.
He added this was the first time they were involved in election operations and if it worked out well, they would do the same in the 2012 national election.
