Country warned of effects of HIV/AIDS

THE PNG Business Coalition Against HIV/AIDS (BAHA) has warned the country that HIV/AIDS would affect the economy and its political stability, leading to social upheaval if it is not addressed seriously.
“If you do not do something about HIV/AIDS, then business will fall.
“There will be loss of productivity, you will face high expenditure, there will be increased costs of skilled workers and the economy and political stability of the country will be affected,” the chief executive officer for the National Superannuation Fund (Nasfund) Rod Mitchell said.
It was understood that a unified workplace policy had been spearheaded by Nasfund through BAHA to combat HIV/AIDS from funding obtained through both international and corporate donors around the country.
Mr Mitchell told human resource managers during the Nasfund employers conference at the Melanesian Hotel in Lae yesterday that the HIV/AIDS epidemic was spreading faster than the educational response in the country.
