PM launches agro project in Pomio

Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare has called on the people of Pomio to work together to bring more development into the district.
Sir Michael was speaking during the ground breaking ceremony of Illi-Wawas integrated agricultural project where more than 300 people attended.
Illi-Wawas project is one of the mega agro forestry projects that would construct a 135km road linking Pomio to Kokopo for the first time.
Tzen Nuigini and Landex Ltd have been granted three timber authority permits to develop the Wide Bay area which comprise of the Illi-Wawas project.
Sir Michael said the Government would continue to support road building in the district linking Pomio and West New Britain.
Tzen Nuigini Ltd managing director Peter Ling said the building of the road would take 10 to 15 years and would involve building of 35 new bridges.
Mr Ling said as the company was developing the road, they would do re-forestation and agriculture, which involves planting of oil palms and other crops.
He said excluding plantations, the company was looking at spending half a billion for the whole project.
The company had spent K10 million to bring all the machinery and equipment on the site and have already upgraded 20km of road.
