Nationals ‘still backing Kunai’

By JAMES APA GUMUNO
NATIONAL coordinator of the PNG National Party has denied claims by Jimi MP Francis Kunai about the party endorsing another candidate for the Jimi Open seat.
Joe Mek Teine said last Friday that Mr Kunai’s claims were not true.
He said Mr Kunai was one of the three MPs the party had in the current Government.
The other two are former parliamentary leader Melchior Pep (Dei) and the newly-appointed parliamentary leader Michael Mas Kal (North Waghi).
He said Mr Kunai would still be the official candidate for Jimi Open seat, which he currently occupies.
He said the party did not have any intention to endorse another candidate for the Jimi electorate.
Mr Teine said that the PNG National Party was a stable party and was preparing very well for the upcoming national election.
He said it intended to endorse more than 40 candidates throughout the country and was confident of figuring in the formation of the next government.
Mr Kunai said last week that he would leave the party and team up with other political party.
He said that the reason was that the party president John Munnul had allegedly endorsed another candidate, who was a former prisoner but now out on parole.
He claimed that he was a member of the party for the last five years but Mr Munnul had ‘stabbed him in the back’.
Mr Kunai said he would hand in his resignation letter and move to another party any time this week.
He didn’t reveal the name of the political party.
