EHP gets own Juvenile Court

By ZACHERY PER
YOUNG people under the age of 18 in the Eastern Highlands now have their own court to deal with them if they break the law.
This follows the launching of the Juvenile Court in Goroka last Friday.
Eastern Highlands Deputy Governor Joksy Nakime performed the ribbon-cutting to mark the official opening of the new court.
The launch was witnessed by Deputy Chief Magistrate Steven Oli, magistrates and staff of both National and District Courts in Goroka.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) helped to establish the Juvenile Court.
Mr Oli said that the Goroka judiciary was the latest to have its own Juvenile Court following the set-up in Port Moresby, Kundiawa, Lae, Mt Hagen, Kokopo and Vanimo.
He said Alotau, Kimbe, Madang and Wewak were next in line to have their own Juvenile Courts.
Mr Oli thanked the Eastern Highlands provincial juvenile justice working group (JJWG), senior provincial magistrate Mekeo Gauli, magistrate Gerald Vetunawa, Unicef and those who worked hard to establish the Juvenile Court in Goroka.
Mr Nakime said he was proud to see the opening of the Juvenile Court, which would now dispense justice on young people.
A statement released by Unicef in Goroka said the launching of the court was partly fulfilling the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Children that PNG signed in 1993.
The convention tasked the Government to protect children’s rights including protection from sexual and physical abuses.
