Bougainvilleans donate K50,000 for disaster relief

THE Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) last Friday donated K50,000 in cash to assist in the relief programme for tsunami
victims in Solomon Islands.
PNG’s High Commissioner to the Solomons, Parai Tamei presented the money to the Solomon Islands prime minister Manasseh Sogavare at the prime minister’s office in Honiara.
Mr Tamei said ABG President Joseph Kabui and the people of Bougainville expressed shock over the devastation caused by the tsunami that hit Western and Choiseul provinces on April 2.
Bougainville, which shares a 45-minute boat-ride border with the affected provinces, also felt the impact of the quake and subsequent tsunami that killed at least 43 people in the Solomon Islands.
Mr Tamei said that Bougainville shared difficulties in rehabilitation resources with Solomon Islands but felt responsible to dig deep into their pockets to help the affected people.
“This donation comes right from the heart of the people of Bougainville,” Mr Tamei said.
Mr Sogavare said the donation was very important and timely to meet the needs of victims at this time.
“The donation would go a long way to make life comfortable for those affected,” Mr Sogavare said.
The Solomon Islands prime minister thanked the leaders and people of Bougainville for their sincere assistance to rehabilitate their neighbours.
