Bishops meeting in Mendi

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
THE PNG and Solomon Islands annual Catholic bishops conference is underway at the Kumin Catholic Mission in Mendi, Southern Highlands province.
Twenty-two bishops of the two countries are attending the one-week annual conference that falls straight after Easter each year.
Last year, the conference was held at Mingede outside Kundiawa in Simbu province.
Host bishop of Mendi diocese Stephen Reichert said the conference would mainly discuss issues affecting the “lives of children” and what the Catholic church can do about providing love, care and bettering the lives of children, especially in their families and in areas of health and education. Bishop Reichert said last year the theme was Family Life and this year it has been extended to children’s lives.
He said the CBC observed that strong family units were essential for the upbringing of children with good traditional and Christian values.
The church has also marked this year as the Year of the Children.
