Souths kick off soccer season on a high note

By HENRY MORABANG
NSL champions PRK Souths started their campaign at the amateur level on a high note yesterday by beating Mirel Momase 5-1 in the main game of Port Moresby men's premier soccer.
Souths off-season recruit Frank Tulem and Lawrence Moses from defunct Gelle Hills and Madang import, Lae Cosmos Enoch Abraham and goalkeeper Godfried Baniau contributed well to their new team.
The team was well supported by Souths regulars Eric Komeng, Tasola Niebo, Barnabas Mosebua and David Muta.
Momase were led by Max Eli, David Yakubi, Richard Matanga, John Kelau, Vendy John and fullback Andrew Kinowin.
Souths got the ball rolling through striker Tulem who collected a deflected ball from Momase goalkeeper to score the opening goal.
Five minutes later Momase co-striker Yakubi crossed the corner kick straight into the net to level the score 1-1.
Momase paid dearly for a foul play when fullback Manu Isana brought down Abraham in the penalty and referee Salaiau Sosongan awarded a penalty which was goaled by Komeng to lead 2-1.
Momase had couple of chances but failed to convert while Souths defended the lead until half time.
In the second half, Souths came on strongly when Komeng scored his second goal before Kema Jack coming off the bench collected the double to his name to bring the tally to 5-1.
On Bisini Two, B-Mobile got the baptism of fire in the premier division when PS Ruts led by Chris Mullul and Donovan Kabewa hammered them 4-1.
The goal scorers for PS Rutz were Steven Mais, Rodney, Manu Paul and Chris Mullul while Michael Salaiau scored the only goal for the newly promoted team.
The results for the premier games played on Saturday were Rapatona 4 beat Guria 2, Cosmos 2 beat University 0, Verave 2 drew with Defence 2.
