Souths kick off soccer season on a
high note

NSL champions PRK Souths started their campaign at the amateur
level on a high note yesterday by beating Mirel Momase 5-1 in the
main game of Port Moresby men's premier soccer.
Souths off-season recruit Frank Tulem and Lawrence Moses from
defunct Gelle Hills and Madang import, Lae Cosmos Enoch Abraham
and goalkeeper Godfried Baniau contributed well to their new team.
The team was well supported by Souths regulars Eric Komeng, Tasola
Niebo, Barnabas Mosebua and David Muta.
Momase were led by Max Eli, David Yakubi, Richard Matanga, John
Kelau, Vendy John and fullback Andrew Kinowin.
Souths got the ball rolling through striker Tulem who collected a
deflected ball from Momase goalkeeper to score the opening goal.
Five minutes later Momase co-striker Yakubi crossed the corner
kick straight into the net to level the score 1-1.
Momase paid dearly for a foul play when fullback Manu Isana
brought down Abraham in the penalty and referee Salaiau Sosongan
awarded a penalty which was goaled by Komeng to lead 2-1.
Momase had couple of chances but failed to convert while Souths
defended the lead until half time.
In the second half, Souths came on strongly when Komeng scored his
second goal before Kema Jack coming off the bench collected the
double to his name to bring the tally to 5-1.
On Bisini Two, B-Mobile got the baptism of fire in the premier
division when PS Ruts led by Chris Mullul and Donovan Kabewa
hammered them 4-1.
The goal scorers for PS Rutz were Steven Mais, Rodney, Manu Paul
and Chris Mullul while Michael Salaiau scored the only goal for
the newly promoted team.
The results for the premier games played on Saturday were Rapatona
4 beat Guria 2, Cosmos 2 beat University 0, Verave 2 drew with
Defence 2.
In the women's premier, Rapatona international Lydia Barnabas and
Deslyn Siniu had a field day by thrashing PNG Gardener 7-0, Lamana
1 drew with Guria 1, Telikom won on forfeit, University 5 beat PS
Ruts 0, Markham Yarangs won on forfeit against Reccos.
In the opening game Barnabas scored three opening goals before
Siniu completed the trot with a quartet to bring the tally to
seven unanswered goals.
