Uphill battle for runners

The Taurama Leisure Centre hosted the fine athletes of the Port Moresby Road Runners for races over 2.7km and 6.7km on Saturday afternoon. The initial lap of the centre's busy car park spread the field as cars and runners sought to avoid each other.
The initial stage of both races was a run up past the private hospital to the water tower on top of the hill. This exhausting stage caused a few racers to change their pre-race plans from the 6.7km event to the shorter race.
Koyabe Pi showed his intention to win the short race as he shot from the blocks like a greyhound. Pi won in 10.11, just in front of Akis Ivia.
Lucy Tobia was the fastest girl finishing well in front of Jenny Mex.
Milton Iakosi won the 6.7km race in 24.55. Iakosi was not seriously challenged by the rest of the field and finished 90 seconds in front of second placed Swans Pinampio.
Cristi Morf was the fastest female.
Race conditions were mild for the afternoon. Hopefully, such conditions will prevail next week as next Saturday's races leave from "The Rock" shelter half way up the Poreporena Highway from where competitors will race over particularly difficult courses of 1.4km, 2.5km, and a gruelling 8km.
