Publicity on crime destroys tourism in PNG: Apec official

By ELIJAH FAIPARIK
MEDIA publicity on law and order problems is a destructive tool for tourism in Papua New Guinea, a workshop on tourism impediments was told on Wednesday.
Assistant Secretary for National Planning (economic division) Koney Samuel said law and order was a big problem and the media was also a destructive tool as it provided bad publicity, thus affecting the tourism industry.
An official from the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority said tourism was not prioritised in the Government’s Medium Term Development Plan, therefore, it was difficult to seek funds from donor agencies.
The workshop ended after participants’ presentations and closing remarks by the Apec Secretariat representative and workshop facilitator Dr Lawan Thanadsillapakul.
Dr Thanadsillapakul said one of the barriers limiting the growth of tourism in PNG was the difficulty in getting visas to travel to the country.
The major objectives of the workshop were to identify, update, analyse and prioritise impediments or measures to tourism development.
The expected outcomes were to thoroughly investigate and analyse other related issues and aspects which include risks and new challenges to the tourism industry of the Apec region and to have a significant, substantive and comprehensive study on tourism impediments
The Apec Secretariat hosted the workshop with support from the PNGTPA at the Gateway Hotel in Port Moresby.
PNGTPA, Internal Revenue Commission, World Wide Fund and the Department of National Planning officials attended the workshop.
