Natural disasters hit ESP

By GABRIEL FITO
THE East Sepik province has continued to suffer from natural disaster as a result of continuous rains in the Yangoru and Maprik districts for the last three weeks.
Food gardens, cash crops and homes were destroyed by landslides and floods.
Hundreds of Makembu and Pangembit villages in Yangoru were threatened by rising water levels after the Hambeli and Warabung Rivers flooded their banks two weeks ago.
The Nyamikum and Wemamu villages in Maprik last Wednesday became victim to landslips that bulldozed all their food gardens on both sides of the Amaku and Klin Rivers.
Cash crops such as cocoa, coconut and vanilla gardens were all destroyed.
The villagers told The National in Maprik last weekend that garden crops such as yam, banana, taro, other vegetables and greens were destroyed and that it would take some months before they could make new gardens.
The affected villagers are being supported by relatives in unaffected areas while they wait for the floods to subside.
Meanwhile, East Sepik provincial disaster coordinator Michael Kaprangi said he had received reports of the tragedy at Yangoru but he added that only a detailed report from the local level government would determine the distribution of relief supplies to the victims.
