Tribunal hears of leader’s duty to render returns

A LEADERSHIP Tribunal was told that a leader who resigned from a certain public office and held another public office within three months was duty bound to produce annual statements of both offices.
A witness for public prosecution Nemo Yalo informed the tribunal inquiring allegations of misconduct in office against Bulolo MP John Muingnepe that the leader had resigned, but had continued to hold another public office within a three-month period before the full term elapsed.
Under the Organic Law on Duties and Responsibilities of Leadership, it is the leader’s obligation to render annual returns.
Mr Muingnepe’s lawyer Davis Stevens argued that according to a letter rendered to the minister at the time, his client had resigned as secretary to the forest minister on July 24, 1996, to contest the election where he won and returned as an MP but in different periods of time and should not be subject to producing reports for the previous position.
Mr Yalo said it was a leader’s duty to provide both statements.
