PX halts Hoskins flights

AIR Niugini temporarily suspended its services to Hoskins as of 6pm yesterday.
A statement from the airline said the suspension of services was due to the deterioration of the taxi way at Hoskins airport, which had become a safety issue.
Services will resume when the repair work to the taxi way has been completed by the relevant authority.
Passengers who have made prior bookings to Hoskins are to check with their nearest Air Niugini sales office or travel agent to make alternative arrangements.
Air Niugini also confirmed that PX 926 to Madang on April 10 returned to Port Moresby following an indication of hydraulic failure when the aircraft was in the final phase of its preparation to land at Madang airport.
A statement from the airline explained that due to the lack of the appropriate emergency facilities at the Madang airport, the captain elected to return to Port Moresby where standard operating procedures according to regulations were carried out for the landing of the aircraft.
Air Niugini also clarified that the engines were not switched off, as claimed in this week’s newspaper report.
“The aircraft was taken to the engineering maintenance where thorough maintenance checks were carried out and the defect was rectified. The aircraft has since returned to service.
“Air Niugini regrets the inconvenience caused to passengers who were affected by the incident and would like to reassure the travelling public that the safety of the passengers, crew and operating aircraft are paramount and of the highest priority to the company.”
