Teams to Arafura to
meet own travel cost
By HENRY MORABANG
SPORTS traveling to next month's
Arafura Games in Darwin, Northern Territory, are responsible for
organising their own travel arrangements.
These are the words of the chairman of Arafura Games Planning
Committee (APC) chairman Thomas Kahai who categorically denied
that APC would provide a chartered aircraft for the travelling
teams.
"There is no charter contrary to the report in the media. All
sports were told that there is no charter in the sports meeting
since February," he said.
However, Kahai said two local airlines companies, Airlines of PNG
and Air Niugini as well as Arafura Games co-sponsor, Qantas, are
offering good travel packages to all sporting teams.
He urged all the sports to utilise these sponsorship packages to
travel for the Arafura Games.
All sports except two swimming and sailing have fully met all the
requirements which include payments of accommodation, air travel,
accreditation, payments of uniforms for the Games.
Mr Kahai urged those sports should immediately contact his office
to settle their outstanding requirements.
The sports confirmed to take part are as follows Defence Bowls,
Disabled Sports, PNG Basketball Federation, PNG Boxing Union, PNG
Swimming, PNG Volleyball Federation, PNG Weightlifting, PNG Women
Bowls, Squash, PNG Netball and PNG Sailing plus the provincial
sides are Enga Soccer (women), Madang Basketball (women), NCD
Hockey (POMHA) and NCD Boxing.
Kahai said many national sporting federations are using the
Arafura Games as part of their preparation for the Pacific Games
in Apia, Samoa.
He said many sports are utilising the PNG Sports Trust funds from
MRDC which ease their burden to find money for airline tickets,
accommodation and other logistics problems.
