| Boom is not reflected in the people’s pockets | |
|
THE natural resources of PNG are
being exploited for the benefit of few unscrupulous politicians. The wealth of this great nation is in the hands of a few self-centered people with vested interest. Millions of kina are being diverted every day. Corruption has infiltrated into our government. Ordinary people are slapped with a jail term for stealing a packet of biscuit while those who steal millions get off scot-free. Unemployment in high but the government is saying PNG is enjoying an economic boom with 6% growth. But the people’s pockets are empty. Is this growth? If we are rich in resources, where is the infrastructure development from the sale of our resources? We hardly see our roads being sealed and maintained. Many rural villagers hardly see a road linking to their villages. It is predicated that in 20 years, our forests will be gone. If that is true, then where will we cut trees to build our houses? We still live in village huts built from bush materials. Rural villagers have never heard of electricity. What has our government achieved for the last 33 years? Basic government services such as clinics and schools are non-existent in rural areas. Some schools and clinics have closed down because of lack of government funding. People are dying from preventable diseases. Do you really believe what the government is saying about our growing economy when the people are still living below the poverty level? Cry my beloved PNG Lae |
