By MUSARIKE ANANGAI
Fullback Burau Burau scored two tries and set up one other in a man-of-the-match performance that enabled the Brian Bell Bulldogs register their second SP Cup win at the Lloyd Robson Oval in Port Moresby yesterday.
Burau scored a try each either side of halftime as the Bulldogs built on from a narrow 10-8 halftime lead to run out 26-10 victors over the Pagini Warriors.
Other round two matches around the country saw the Wari Vele Raiders beat the Kunjin Eagles 26-15 at Kagamuga, the Lahanis downed the Bombers 32-10 in Goroka while the Muruks defeated the Mioks 22-4 in Madang.
In Port Moresby second rower Roy Tela and prop Aaron Mulunga put up an impressive forwards display while captain and lock Porian Bal did likewise for the Warriors.
Warriors winger Michael Mark kept the crowd on their feet with his sizzling runs while Bulldogs centres Kevin Frank and Lazen Marabe worked overtime both in attack and defence.
The Bulldogs scored four of their five tries through their left side attack, winger Elizah Riyong grabbed the first one following quick hands by five-eighth Jessie Joe and Marabe in the seventh minute.
Benjamin John's penalty goal in the 11th minute extended the Bulldogs lead to 6-0 but the Warriors reduced the margin to 6-2 with a successful Tomson Kuiwa penalty goal in the 14th minute.
Replacement Geno Kima and Joe combined to send Burau in for his first try in the 27th minute.
Close to fulltime Mark made a cross field run in the Bulldogs 20m line, wrong footed several defenders before linking up with replacements Toxsy Owi and Joe Kupsy who sent winger Joseph Numapo in inches from the left touchline.
Kuiwa's sideline conversion made it 10-8 at halftime.
The Bulldogs were heavily penalised and another Kuiwa penalty immediately after halftime levelled the match, but the Warriors failed to add more points due to early tackle errors.
The Bulldogs broke the deadlock while down to 12 players after skipper Thomas Ninkama was sinbinned.
Joe and Burau created an overlap for Marabe to dive over in the left corner.
Halfback Brian Apo pounced on a loose ball in the in goal to extend the Bulldogs lead, before Burau straightened onto a Joe pass from close range to seal victory.
After round two the Lahanis, Bulldogs and the Raiders are on four points, Muruks, Warriors and the Gurias on two, Eagles and Mioks on one while the Bombers are still winless.
