Education signs MoU on entrepreneurship training
By ALISON ANIS
A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MoU)
was signed yesterday between the Department of Education (DOE) and
Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) to incorporate basic
entrepreneurship skills for school-age children into the school
curriculum.
The MoU signed by the Secretary for Education Dr Joseph Pagelio
and SBDC acting managing director Steven Maken was to provide an
alternative for youths undergoing TVET training, particularly
students who drop out of the education system at primary level to
start their own business with the knowledge acquired from the
training.
With the beneficiaries of students aged from 14 and upwards, the
International Labour Office developed “Know About Business” (KAB)
entrepreneurship training programmes which will be further
developed to national standards to suit the needs of young Papua
New Guineans.
“The task of the PNG education and training system is to prepare
students to understand and integrate themselves into the society
and the world of work.
“It is also to promote awareness among our students of the
opportunities and challenges of entrepreneurship and
self-employment, their role in shaping their own future and that
of PNG’s economic and social development,” Dr Pagelio said.
He said the agreement was significant because it was in line with
the PNG medium term development strategy 2005-2010.
He said the KAB training programme would equip and empower young
people with the necessary skills of business entrepreneurship so
they could be able to generate income through establishments of
small businesses.
Training has started with eight trained teachers appointed to
carry out the training programme. SBDC will provide training
modules for all schools and TVET in PNG.
“KAB package is directed towards teachers and instructors in
public, private vocational and technical training institutions and
general secondary education.
“It can also be used for tertiary education and for professionals
involved in enterprises promotion,” Mr Maken said.
