Fisheries industry needs to update database

AN updated database for fisheries industry in PNG is needed to solicit external funding assistance to boost the industry.
Provincial liaison coordinator with the National Fisheries Authority’s (NFA) Leka Pitoi made this known in Goroka this week during a meeting with Rural Development Bank (RDB) and NFA and inland fish farmers in the Highlands.
He said the database would assess the viability of fisheries industry in the country.
Mr Pitoi said information from the database would strengthen the net-work between the two organisations and stakeholders, especially fish farmers, to provide information on markets and prices.
He said NFA was also determined to keep records of researches to assess how far the project went.
He said if information in the database revealed that inland fish farming was economically viable, NFA would invest more in the industry.
Mr Pitoi said RDB’s Fisheries Credit Facility was not a free Government handout, adding that it was to facilitate for the advancement of inland fishery.
