Unfair appointments in force
COMMANDER Peter Ilau seems to be treating the PNG Defence Force like a personal business, withholding promotions from experienced and capable officers and fast-tracking promotions of the young and inexperienced. One young officer, for example, was promoted to captain and then two months later, made a major. Is it a coincidence that he also comes from the same province as Ilau? Another officer, who was promoted to the rank of major six months ago, is now recommended for another promotion to lieutenant-colonel to head a transport section. This is despite strong recommendations for another senior officer with adequate training to be appointed to the position instead. Ilau has also arranged for army personnel to provide protection for his family throughout the day, which previous commanders never did. – Insider, Port Moresby

Yawari should work with Powi
I HAVE been waiting patiently for Southern Highlands Governor Hami Yawari to respond to a statement put out by former minister Daniel Tulapi several days ago by way of a newspaper advertisement. The issues raised by Tulapi are serious. Yawari should note that whoever becomes the administrator of the province should not be his concern as his own position is hanging in the balance. He is creating more problems for himself by getting involved in the appointment. He would be wiser to just set aside his objections and work with the NEC’s choice, William Powi. – Ipsegin Naik, Port Moresby

Going bananas over boats
THE operation of fibreglass banana boats, powered by outboard motors, in coastal maritime communities has claimed many lives in the past. More lives will be lost if nothing is done. It is the Government’s duty to preserve human lives. The authorities concerned must come down hard on the issue and introduce regulations to govern the operation of such boats. For instance, such boats must have certain life-saving equipment on board. Also, companies selling such boats could also be required to include such equipment. – Parcs Munmum, Lae

All for the dame
I HAVE seen changes in this country, like the implementation of women’s rights, thanks to the efforts of Dame Carol Kidu. We need politicians like her who are fair and honest and I would urge other self-serving politicians to stop criticising her. I hope she will remain the MP for Moresby Southwest. – Bruce Dulu, Port Moresby

Wrong choice for Nawaeb
I BELIEVE the New Generation Party’s choice of candidate for the Nawaeb Open electorate in Morobe is a mistake. It should seriously check the person’s background. The party is good but it needs to improve its scrutiny of candidates. – Observer, Via email

Recall former police officers
THE Police Commissioner should consider recalling former members of the force to help maintain law and order during the coming general election instead of relying on reservists who are not adequately trained. – Expobere Ali, Lae
