Sir Michael to launch electrification project

By ANDREW ALPHONSE
AFTER some delay, the K80 million Southern Highlands rural electrification project will be launched by Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare in Tari today.
The launching was first set for March 2 in Tari but the PM’s office was forced to cancel the trip at the 11th hour for security reasons.
Sir Michael is expected to be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Don Polye, Minister for State Enterprises Arthur Somare, Inter-Government Relations Minister Sam Abal, Opposition leader Peter O’Neill, Treasurer Sir Rabbie Namaliu, Finance Minister John Hickey and Chief Secretary Isaac Lupari.
Delegates from PNG Power and the Independent Public Business Corporation, resource developers Barrick (PNG) Ltd, Oil Search and Porgera Joint Venture are also expected to attend.
Construction work will start by August and it is anticipated that phase one of the project will be completed by next May.
Phase two will see electricity supplied to Margarima, neighbouring Kandep in Enga province, Nipa, Kutubu and Moran project areas.
Phase three will be extended to Ialibu, Pangia, Kagua, Erave and Gobe areas.
The project Memorandum of Agreement for the project was signed with PNG Power on Feb 12.
