CP not in favour of LLGs

A PNG Country Party-led government will do away with the local level government system, party leader Jamie Maxtone-Graham said yesterday.
“We need to remove that system because councillors are misusing monies that are delivered for the rural people,” he said.
“We should be reinforcing the provincial and district administrations, increasing public service salaries, tying salary increases to productivity targets, downsizing the public service, and reducing the number of monopolies and the number of autonomous authorities.”
Mr Maxtone-Graham revealed the party’s plans during a political seminar at the Hideaway Hotel in Port Moresby.
The seminar was facilitated by the National Research Institute.
Mr Graham said that the removal of the local level government system was part of their mission to develop the nation’s rural resources to empower the people.
“Our mission is to mobilise our human resource, upgrade our communications and personal skills, establish a national economic engine, maintain self-sufficiency, personal wealth creation, and good governance of the public service and improve law and order.”
