NA candidate riled by listing

NATIONAL Alliance Party candidate for Obura-Wonenara seat in Eastern Highlands was surprised to find his name among candidates endorsed by United Party on Tuesday.
Candidate Donald Dono Nia in the company of Eastern Highlands NA branch president Auwo Ketauwo and NA coordinator for Obura-Wonenara electorate Mandi Kuri on Tuesday called on United Party to immediately retract Mr Nia’s name from their list of candidates.
Mr Nia said that he had never sought endorsement or approached United Party for endorsement and was surprised at sighting his name among the list
of UP candidates.
“I have not talked with any officials of the United Party. I am very surprised at reading my name among the United Party-endorsed candidates,” Mr Nia said.
He said he supplied his bio-data by filling out form 29 of the Electoral Commission under the NA endorsement last month and not under the United Party.
Mr Ketauwo called on officials of other political parties not to unnecessarily endorse candidates without consent and confirmation.
“Such problems lead to confusions among supporters of the candidates and severely affect the preparedness of the candidates concerned,” he said.
Mr Kuri said he recommended Mr Nia to the NA and got the party endorsement for him.
He urged supporters and the people of Obura-Wonenara to remain calm and not be concerned by the report, because Mr Nia remained the official candidate for the ruling party.
“We are also calling on the executives of the United Party to make a public retraction,” he said.
In a full page advertisement in The National on April 19, NA national president Simon Kaiwi announced Mr Nia among the list of NA endorsed candidates to contest the national election.
